Space weather expert Dr. Tamitha Skov has announced that some regions of the world could experience radio and GPS blackouts for an hour after a solar flare hits Earth.

At 06:23 this morning, space weather expert Dr. Tamitha Skov warned that parts of the world could experience radio and GPS blackouts within the next hour.

“M3.4 flare now! R1 level #RadioBlackout from active region 3030. Solar Storm is also released. Amateur radio and GPS users will experience signal interference during Earth Day, especially in Asia Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, India, and eastern Russia over the next hour,” Skov wrote on his Twitter account.

According to Spaceweather.com, the three-hour solar flare was caused by an outburst from a sunspot, known as AR3032.

His party said that the flare belongs to class M, which means that the intensity is moderate and, in general, the impact of this class of solar flare causes brief radio blackouts that affect the polar regions of the Earth.

“Growing sunspot AR3032 exploded on June 13 (0407 UT), producing an M3-class solar flare that lasted more than three hours,” Spaceweather wrote.

These flares are class M, meaning they are medium in size and generally cause brief radio blackouts that affect Earth’s polar regions.

According to the European Space Agency, M-class flares can also sometimes cause small radiation storms.

The extreme ultraviolet radiation from the flares is also said to have caused shortwave radio blackouts in Japan and Southeast Asia, affecting frequencies below 30 MHz.

They also warned that exploding sunspots could spew a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. One of the most powerful forms of solar storms, CMEs occur when the Sun emits a cloud of charged particles and electromagnetic fluctuations.

When the CME is pointed at Earth, a distinctive effect is observed that enhances the Northern and Austral Lights, the natural light shows produced when particles from the solar wind excite atoms in Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing them to glow.

Auroras form curtains of light that follow geomagnetic field lines and appear in different colors depending on which atoms are excited.

The two main gases in Earth’s atmosphere are oxygen, which gives off a greenish glow, and nitrogen, which appears in blue, pink, and purple colors.
