DEJAVANEWS.COM – The death toll continues to rise due to the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck Afghanistan.

Reported by Al Jazeera, Wednesday (6/22/2022) evening WIB, the death toll has touched 1,000.

Meanwhile, the wounded were around 1,500 people.

Authorities say hundreds of houses have been destroyed in the southeastern region of Afghanistan.

According to a report by the United States Geological Survey (USA), the earthquake occurred on Wednesday morning (6/22/2022) local time.

Tremors could be felt in neighboring Pakistan and Iran. So far there have been no reports of damage or loss of life in either country.

The Ministry of Culture and Information said more than 1,000 people were killed and more than 1,500 wounded in southeastern Afghanistan.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the epicenter was in the Afghan province of Paktika, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of the city of Khost.

Buildings were also damaged in Khost province and tremors were felt some 375 kilometers (230 miles) away in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.

Rescue teams were deployed by helicopter to the affected areas.

“A strong and prolonged tremor was felt in Kabul, which was 200 km away,” according to a resident who posted on the European Mediterranean Seismology Center (EMSC) website.

Cited by Reuters, photos in Afghan media and social media showed houses turned to rubble.

Deaths were also reported in the eastern provinces of Khost and Nangarhar, said Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, head of the Taliban government’s disaster management authority.

Local officials fear the death toll will rise if the central government fails to provide emergency assistance.

“A massive earthquake has rocked four districts in Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our citizens and destroying dozens of homes,” Bilal Karimi, deputy spokesman for the Taliban government, wrote on Twitter.
