How to write the year

The format used to write the year is the use of numbers or numerals, except at the beginning of the sentence.

Where you often see the number indicating the year written at the beginning of the sentence, although the example is wrong, to write the year at the beginning of the sentence it must be written clearly and completely with words.

There is a difference between the British and the American script, as the American script does not use the conjunction “and” to refer to the year after 2000, for example, 2005 is read as “two thousand and five”.

Meanwhile, the English writing style uses “and” to refer to the year and it becomes commonplace, like “two thousand and five”.

However, these two writing styles will not affect the writing and both can be used because they are correct.

Example:

A lot happened in the political arena in 2016.

2016 was an eventful year in politics atau 2016 was an eventful year in politics.

How to write the month and day

If in Indonesian you write in day-month format, in English it cannot be like that.

Where in English format it can be said that it has an inverted format, namely month-day.

In the writing of the days, cardinal numbers (1,2,3) are used instead of ordinal numbers (first, second, third), although ordinal numbers are used in pronunciation.

This can be proven from the pronunciation of “January 1, 2017”, which if spelled changes to January 1, 2017.

If you are still confused about how to place commas when writing dates.

If in US format, the format used is month-day-year with a comma before the year and after the day.

However, if you write in UK format as day-date-month like writing Indonesian, don’t use commas.

Example:

On May 13, 2007 Daniel was born.

On May 13, 2007 Daniel was born.

Both the month and day spellings can be said to match if you use the correct comma.

Simply choose which format you want to use.

Date with day name

In the Indonesian format used, you will usually mention the name of the day before writing the specific date.

When writing in English format, this form can still be valid as long as the comma is used correctly. For example:

  • How lucky that the world does not end on Friday, December 23, 2021
  • Monday May 9th is my last day of work.

If you look at the example above, there is a mandatory comma after the day.

This serves to separate the day of the year and can also be used as a separator before continuing with the sentence.

Where this form of writing is an abbreviation of the four-digit year form to make it easier to memorize.
