Rotterdam (Netherlands), June 23 The Indian women’s hockey team recorded a lopsided 4-0 victory over the USA to secure third place in their debut campaign in the FIH Hockey Pro League in Rotterdam on Wednesday.

Experienced striker Vandana Katariya (39′, 54′) starred with a brace while Sonika (54′) and Sangita Kumari (57′) each scored a goal to help India close the prestigious league on a high note before of the FIH Women’s. Hockey World Cup 2022.

The Indian team got out of the blocks quickly, with Sharmila Devi making a fantastic run inside the US circle in the first minute, but her shot went wide of the goal post. In the next minute, the US won their first penalty corner of the match, however Savita made an easy save to deny the US an early goal lead.

India responded with a brave drive, with Sharmila firing just meters from goal, but the US goalkeeper managed to avoid danger.

The last leg of the first quarter saw end-to-end action, with both teams trying to make space in each other’s attacking circles and showing good defensive skills. The USA also won their second penalty corner of the match in the 12th minute, but failed to break the tie.

Both teams tried to look for scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but neither could find a chance. India, however, enjoyed possession throughout the second quarter. They even won two Penalty Corners in the 23rd and 26th minutes, respectively, but the US defense kept the Indians at bay, thus ending the first half in a 0-0 draw.

India started the third quarter in a positive way and earned a Penalty Corner in the 33rd minute of the match. However, they were unable to carry out their attempt because they failed to catch the ball. Moments later, another glorious opportunity came for India as they won a PC after a good video call and it was experienced striker Vandana who successfully deflected the ball past the US goalkeeper to give India a much-needed lead. from 1-0.

India created a couple of chances to extend their lead, but each of their attempts went wide. In the 43rd minute, the US won a PC but was unable to convert it when Ashley Hoffman’s shot flew high over the Indian goal.

The Indian team started the fourth quarter aggressively and created potential scoring opportunities to extend their lead. However, the US defense stood tall and kept the Indians at bay. Not letting the missed opportunities affect their momentum, India upped their ante and piled heavy pressure on the US defense. As a result, India went on to score two goals in one minute.

Vandana and Sonika each scored a goal in the 54th minute to make the score 3-0. The US responded quickly and earned a PC, but Savita stood her ground and kept the ball away from her goal.

India added a fourth goal to their tally in the 57th minute through young striker Sangita. The USA were again rewarded with a PC in the last minute of the match, but the solid Indian defense led by Savita ensured that India sealed their debut campaign in the FIH Hockey Pro League with a massive 4-0 win.
