Yellowstone Star Kelly Reilly On Heartbreaking Season 4 Finale Scene America Went After Me For That

Beth Dutton has done a lot of questionable things on “Yellowstone,” most recently involving blackmailing her half-brother Jamie into murdering their biological father and then taking pictures of him from afar. But, that didn’t seem to really affect “Yellowstone” fans. What really pissed them off was when Beth basically refused to be Carter’s new mom.

Okay, he did it in a way that was, shall we say, not great. He tried to call her “mom” and she shut that down real quick, forbidding him to call her mom at all. First, when he greeted her with her name, she responded, “Hey, baby,” almost instinctively. But then she backed away. It was a tense moment, and the scene left us crying in frustration along with Carter.

In a recent interview with TV Line, “Yellowstone” star Kelly Reilly revealed that fans were very upset about that scene. “America is gone after me for that!” she laughed. “I was like, ‘That’s the character, not me!’ But I understand it. he wishes she would [let herself be a mother to him]also.”

But, she explained, Beth, who we’ll see a lot more of in season 5, was just doing it to be honest and open with Carter. “But think about it,” she said, “if you’re telling this kid you just met, ‘Yes, I’ll be your mom,’ that’s not being true to him. She says, ‘You had a mother.’ She died. I can’t replace that. But I will be your friend. I think there’s something honorable about that.”

‘Yellowstone’ fans disagreed with how Beth Dutton handled the Carter situation

It was him road Beth did, however, that gave fans goosebumps. Almost everyone expected Beth and Rip to adopt Carter at the end of season 4; and then in that wild ending Beth goes and does that. Somehow it disappointed “Yellowstone” fans everywhere.

But, Beth is really struggling with a lot of personal issues, and I, for one, don’t think she’s ready to be a mom to someone. She has to learn to take care of herself, first, and forgive herself for the fact that she can’t give Rip a child of her own. Kelly Reilly also commented on Beth’s guilt. “I hope that eventually she will forgive herself, because I think she will be even more powerful then,” she said. Although, she added, not yet. “There’s too much fun before that!”

Although we all collectively hate how Beth handled the situation, there is something to be said for Kelly Reilly’s incredible performance. “Yellowstone” director Stephen Kay praised Reilly in a recent TV Line interview: “She can act forever.”

Kay went on to explain that while Reilly has a lot of pressure on her as a lead actress, she is like the Energizer bunny when it comes to acting. “I can’t count how many times I was like, ‘We got it,’ and then I wanted to do another take just to play with it,” she said. Kelly is like that. She can move on.”
