KUALA LUMPUR: The story of Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye’s half-century journey from humble beginnings to politician to social activist is now documented in a biography published by the Sultan of Selangor.

The title of the biography, Name Lee Lam Thye: Recording a Lifetime of Service, is a pretty light-hearted reference to how people would look to him for help with their problems.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in his speech, recalled how he was impressed by Lee’s methods and years of service to the general public.

“He was always willing to meet the rakyat and listen to their problems,” he acknowledged, adding that Lee would go the extra mile to help people with every potential technique.

“I am glad that although he is not a rakyat wakil or a member of a political group, he is still serving the rakyat and helping people through NGOs and volunteer work,” Sultan Sharafuddin said yesterday.

Lee in his speech recognized that there is no nobler way out than to serve the people and the nation.

“The only factor that can prevent us from making a contribution is our egocentric needs.”

Through their shared personal experiences within the data, Lee acknowledged that he hoped it would underscore the importance of service to the general public.

“The purpose of my book is to give an account to the people of Malaysia of the service I have provided for the past 53 years. My political career ended in 1990, but my responsibility and dedication to serving the people and the country remain.”

The 312-page information, purchased from major bookstores, is commercially available in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin, with a Tamil version to be released soon.
