Going viral on the Internet, this image is called the most dangerous image of space ever seen. Everyone is shocked to see this. This image is almost four decades old. NASA took this photograph in February 1984. In it, an astronaut in a white spacesuit can be seen floating in space far from the spacecraft. The blue earth is visible under the feet of the astronaut.
The astronaut seen in the image is Bruce McCandless II. This photo of him was taken when he was rehearsing for a satellite repair mission and exiting the Space Shuttle Challenger. He was the first astronaut to travel to space without cables, separated from the spacecraft.
It is a challenge for any astronaut to do this. NASA has given the title of this image ‘Free Floating’. NASA says this was all made possible by the jet pack on his back, the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU).
McCandless tested a 136-pound MMU near the spacecraft. After this, he was free-floating 320 feet away from the space shuttle.
Bruce McCandless can be seen floating in space untethered in this video.
MMU is a nitrogen-powered jetpack that helps astronauts turn and move around in space.
Bruce McCandless died on December 21, 2017 at the age of 80.
