NO even a limited sports schedule in Season 84 could prevent the University of Santo Tomas from winning a record 45th overall UAAP championship.
The Growling Tigers student-athletes extended their reign into season five by racking up 84 points in the compact eight-event competition that ended Tuesday night.
UST edged out National University, which despite a dominant campaign in women’s volleyball that ended a 65-year championship drought, fell short as it could only muster 81 points.
The Tigers came out victorious in men’s 3×3 basketball, men’s beach volleyball, poomsae and men’s chess, and placed second in women’s 3×3 basketball.
In addition to winning gold in women’s volleyball, the Bulldogs captured titles in women’s 3×3 basketball and women’s chess, while posting runner-up finishes in men’s beach volleyball and poomsae.
Season host La Salle was third with 76 points, while the University of the Philippines, with its men’s basketball team back on top after 36 years, had 71.
Ateneo (58), Adamson (42), Far Eastern University (39) and University of the East (3) completed the final tally in that order.
The UAAP points system awards 15 points to first place, 12 to second, 10 to third, eight to fourth, six to fifth, four to sixth, two to seventh and one to eighth.
